It seems like we barely sent kids back to school and already it is time to greet another New Year. 2018 presented us with many opportunities for ministry. Some might see these as challenges rather than opportunities, and perhaps that is appropriate for Jesus is one who challenges us to be and do the best we can as we seek to grow and live as faithful disciples.
What were the highlights for 2018? For me they included (but were not limited to) our ecumenical ministries with other Green Mountain churches, having several Habitat for Humanity work teams, sending a team to Puerto Rico for Hurricane Maria recovery, forging ahead with plans for a community garden, joint Vacation Bible School with Green Mountain Presbyterian Church and Lutheran Church of the Master, wonderful music programs, and programs for children, youth and adults that enable us to offer the care and love of Christ. All this is possible because of your commitment to the church and the dedication of a truly amazing staff.
As we end 2018 and plan for 2019, we find that our hopes and dreams for ministries in 2019 may be limited by the resources that we make available for them. As of this writing, we are short approximately $22,000 from meeting the budget requests presented by the various work areas of the church. It should be noted that the total budget requests for 2019 are only about $500 more than the budget for 2018. What does that mean as we plan for 2019? It means either we accept the challenge of Jesus to provide for the ministries of our church by stepping up our commitment to supporting the church financially or ministries will be cut back.
No one can manage their household budget by spending more than what comes in. Neither can the church. If you have already made your commitment to support the ministries of the church financially in 2019, thank you! If you haven’t done so, I hope that you will give prayerful consideration to doing so. You can pick up a commitment card on the program table, or you can simply make your commitment by sending an email to the church office at email@example.com. My prayer is that 2019 will be a year in which we overwhelmingly live out our commitment to be the people of God in our community, nation and world.
